Is President Bashar Al-Assad being tricked into creating circumstances that will hand the Obama White House a justification for war, or is the plan for Syria’s chemical weapons to be destroyed a geopolitical master stroke that will avert a regional conflict?
Syria’s Foreign Minister Walid Muallem today formally accepted a Russian proposal – first mooted by John Kerry – for Syria to hand its chemical arsenal over to international control in a bid to avoid a US military attack.
Many see the development as a stunning example of Russia once again outmaneuvering the United States, seizing on an apparent gaffe by Kerry in order to pull the rug out from underneath Washington and derail Obama’s pretext for war.
However, could the precondition of Syria destroying its chemical weapons actually be used to rescue a congressional vote that had looked doomed to fail?

In December 2003, Colonel Gaddafi agreed to give up his weapons of mass destruction and allow unimpeded inspections. This didn’t stop the Obama administration coming to the aid of Al-Qaeda-linked rebels eight years later to destroy Libya and leave it in the hands of brutal warlords.
Similarly, Saddam Hussein agreed to give UN weapons inspectors unfettered access in a desperate bid to prevent the US invasion of Iraq, but the move was completely futile because, as in the case of Syria, the decision to attack had already been made...

A gruesome new video which appears to show Muammar Gaddafi's dead body being abused by rebels has surfaced online.
In the shocking clip, which was posted to YouTube on Monday, high-spirited demonstrators apparently use the Libyan dictator's corpse as a ventriloquist's doll.
The footage came to light after a Syrian activist linked to it on Twitter, aiming a threat at Syria's leader Bashar Al Assad.
The minute-long video, whose authenticity cannot be independently verified, seems to have been filmed on October 20 last year, the day Gaddafi was captured and killed by rebel troops.
It shows a confused scene of celebration as young men shout and cheer next to a van containing an apparently dead body which resembles the dictator.
The corpse is topless and covered in blood, and is apparently limp.
One rebel grabs its head and manipulates it while talking in Arabic, apparently mocking the dead leader.
Several of those on the scene are seen filming the proceedings with their cell phones.
Gaddafi's body is then taken out of a van and placed on some sort of stretcher.
After the video was posted online, Syrian anti-government prosestor Sami Al Hamwi wrote about it on Twitter, adding: 'Someone needs to send this to Assad.'

“Playground War – Libya” – Documentary (MUST WATCH)

The newly released documentary by Journeyman TV, Playground War – Libya, is an extremely important and heartbreaking insight into the realities of NATO’s war on Libya.
Shot in Sirte, the city that was obliterated during the last weeks of NATO’s bombing campaign, the interviewees who participated very bravely give an extremely honest account of the suffering being endured first and foremost by the primary victims of this aggression, Libya’s children.
It shows that the result of this war, like every war and intervention the west has been involved in, has been the division of people who previous to that intervention lived side by side as brothers and sisters, in peace and unity. In Syria, if western support for the insurgency continues, Libya and history shows that the result will be the same.
As a reporter that witnessed Libya transform from a prosperous, well developed country, that provided a good quality of life for its citizens – a fact that the children in this documentary allude to when they repeatedly remark that they wish life would return to how it was before the war – to a country destroyed beyond comprehension, to now being in Nicaragua, which went through a similar experience, the comments from one of the featured families that supported the western backed insurgency against the Jamahiriyah lead by Muammar Gaddafi, were particularly interesting. They remarked how the revolution that they had supported had delivered them no benefits, and that they too were suffering gravely from the war. In Nicaragua, many of the ordinary working class people that fought with the US backed “Contras”, against the FSLN government in the 1980s are now supporting and working with the FSLN government that was reelected in 2007. The reason for this is primarily that after having lived under 16 years of US backed neoliberal government during the 1990s and early 2000s, and like this Libyan family, far from receiving any benefits instead they suffered greatly, they have experienced first hand betrayal by the forces they once supported
It is a profound tragedy to see a similar process playing out amongst the supporters of the NATO campaign in Libya, and Nicaragua provides many lessons in terms of reconciling a bitterly divided society as exists in Libya today.
This video shows how children who understand little of the politics of Libyan history and the war, are of course naturally inclined to support the positions of their parents. It is essential for their future, not that the past is glorified but that they all receive an honest education about Libya’s history, the history of imperialism, and the political reasons that lead to the west’s support for the devastation that they are now living through. Only with such an education can they critically understand their parents positions, what they are living through (e.g. why the NTC will not deliver funds to rebuild their lives, as the local NTC official states in this documentary) and make judgments about what is best for their and their own children’s future.
There is one highly erroneous claim in this documentary, and that is that the “revolution”/insurgency “succeeded” in Sirte. The reality is, and this is well documented in press coverage from the time, that the insurgency did not succeed in Sirte, and this is why it was obliterated to the extent the documentary shows. It was impossible for the insurgency to succeed in Sirte, and it only was able to crush the support of Gaddafi after the most powerful military force on earth ever know to man, NATO, attacked the city and Green Resistance ruthlessly for almost two months.
The bravery of the participants in this documentary in speaking out honestly about their suffering, at a time when the gun rules, should not be underestimated. Hundreds of thousands of people have had to flee the country and are languishing in makeshift detention centres inside Libya, where torture is routine, simply for their political positions being known.

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was wanted dead so his secrets would die with him. So insists Mahmoud Jibril, the man who led the NTC uprising to overthrow Colonel Gaddafi’s regime, in an exclusive interview with RT.
“Too many parties who have real interests that Gaddafi doesn’t talk, that he should be silenced forever,” Mahmoud Jibril told RT, specifying he does not know who exactly killed the Colonel – a foreign entity or Libyans.
“I would love to know who was behind [Colonel Gaddafi’s] killing,” he said.
Jibril told RT the former ruler of Libya Colonel Muammar Gaddafi sent too many contradictory messages, trying to buy time and pretending to have a readiness to share power.
Mahmoud Jibril said he regretted Colonel Gaddafi was not taken alive to face trial, but certain powers that may have wanted him to keep silence due to the secrets he knew.
After months of fierce resistance to NTC militia backed by allied NATO forces, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was captured on October 21, 2011, in his hometown and stronghold of Sirte while trying to escape from encirclement. He was captured alive, but instead of being treated as prisoner of war, interrogated and put on trial, the former ruler of Libya was tortured for several hours and then murdered by a militia mob.
Later, the NTC claimed they never gave an order to kill Colonel Gaddafi. They even stated that at first the former Libyan leader was fatally wounded when a gunfight between his supporters and NTC fighters broke out after his capture.

Damaging new claims have emerged about the funding of Nicolas Sarkozy's 2007 election campaign and his links with former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi emerged.
The French investigative website Mediapart claims to have seen a confidential note suggesting Gaddafi contributed up to €50m (£42m) to Sarkozy's election fund five years ago.
Similar allegations emerged a year ago when Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam claimed Libya helped finance the 2007 campaign and demanded the French president, who led the war on the Libyan leader, return the money.
In an interview with the Euronews TV channel, Saif al-Islam, who is currently being held in Libya after his father's defeat and death, threatened to make details of the bank transfers public after the French leader threw his weight behind opposition forces.
The latest allegations come at a crucial time for Sarkozy who is seeking a second term in office in a two-round election in under six weeks.
Mediapart journalist Fabrice Arfi told the Guardian he had seen leaked documents contained in the legal dossier of the affair, currently under investigation by a judge.
"We knew these documents existed but it is the first time we have had the details of what was in them," he said.
"And there are lots of details, including dates, places and amounts."
One document, a government briefing note, allegedly points to visits to Libya by Sarkozy and his close colleagues and advisers, which it says were aimed at securing campaign funding.
Shortly after Sarkozy's election, Colonel Gaddafi was invited to Paris and allowed to pitch his bedouin tent in the grounds of an official French residence close to the Elysée Palace. He was described as the "Brother Leader" by the French.
When previously asked about Saif al-Islam's claims, a spokesman for the Elysée Palace told Le Monde: "We deny it, quite evidently."

A shocking video has appeared on the Internet showing Libyan rebels torturing a group of black Africans. People with their hands bound are shown being locked in a zoo-like cage and allegedly forced to eat the old Libyan flag.
“Eat the flag, you dog. Patience you dog, patience. God is Great,” screams a voice off-camera in the video uploaded to YouTube last week, which also made its way onto LiveLeak.com.
The torturers are also shown making the group of captive black Africans stand up with pieces of green cloth still in their mouths and apparently forcing them start jumping.
A number of people are shown standing outside the cage watching the atrocity.
After Muammar Gaddafi was killed, hundreds of migrant workers from neighboring states were imprisoned by fighters allied to the new interim authorities.
They accuse the black Africans of having been mercenaries for the late ruler.
In the course of the fighting to topple Gaddafi last year, sub-Saharan African migrants and refugees “became targets of stigma, discrimination and violence,” the human rights group Amnesty International said last month.
“At the beginning of the crisis, there was vastly exaggerated propaganda for which the highest level of the National Transitional Council should take some responsibility because they largely contributed to that unfounded propaganda,” said Donatella Rovera, Amnesty’s senior crisis response advisor.
Some of the black migrants managed to flee into neighboring Mali and Niger, but more than 5,000 were detained. They face mass execution, beatings, and revenge killings, according to an Al Jazeera report published back in September.
Before the Libyan uprising broke out, the country hosted about a million black African workers, many of them employed in domestic work, construction, trash collection and other low-wage jobs.
Human Rights Investigations (HRI) suspect Libyan rebels of ethnic cleansing of the black population of the country, particularly in the city of Tawergha.
