Mars Curiosity rover images ancient stream-bed once flowing with water

New hope for life on Mars as Curiosity beams back pictures proving planet was covered in 'waist-deep' streams of water
By DAILY MAIL
September 27, 2012

Hopes that Mars could have supported life have received a boost following the discovery of evidence that water once flowed on the planet in streams several feet deep.

The news, which has left top NASA scientists 'excited', comes thanks to photographs of bedrock beamed back from the red planet by the Curiosity rover.

There have been previous signs that water existed on Mars long ago, but the images released on Thursday showing pebbles rounded off, probably by water, offered the most convincing evidence so far of an ancient streambed which could have been waist-deep.

There was 'a vigorous flow on the surface of Mars,' said chief scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology. 'We're really excited about this.'

The discovery did not come as a complete surprise. NASA decided to land Curiosity inside Gale Crater near the Martian equator because photos from space hinted that the spot possessed a watery past.

The six-wheeled rover safely landed on August 5 after a nail-biting plunge through the Martian atmosphere. It is on a two-year, $2.5billion mission to study whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for microbial life.

Mars is now a frozen desert with no hint of water on its radiation-scarred surface, but geological studies of rocks by previous missions suggest the planet used to be warmer and wetter.

The latest evidence came from photos that Curiosity took revealing rounded pebbles and gravel - a sign that the rocks were transported long distances by water and smoothed out.
The size of the rocks - ranging from a sand grain to a golf ball - indicates that they could not have been carried by wind, said mission scientist Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona.

Though Curiosity did not use its high-tech instruments to drill into the rocks or analyze their chemical makeup, Mr Grotzinger said scientists were sure that water played a role based on just studying the pictures.

It is unclear how long the water persisted on the surface, but it easily could have lasted 'thousands to millions of years,' said mission scientist Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

Curiosity chanced upon the dried-up streambed while driving to Glenelg, an intriguing spot where three types of terrain meet. Its ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a mountain rising from the center of crater floor, but it is not expected to travel there until the end of the year.

Finding past water is a first step toward learning whether the environment could have supported microbes. Scientists generally agree that besides water and an energy source such as the sun, organic carbon is a necessary prerequisite for life.

While an ancient streambed holds promise as a potentially habitable environment, scientists do not think it is a good place to preserve the carbon building blocks of life.

The rover will therefore continue its trek to the foothills of Mount Sharp where there is a better chance of finding organic material.

Want a `bagel head` - the next bizarre beauty trend?

Could the bizarre 'bagel head' look be Japan's most extreme beauty trend yet?
National Geographic's Taboo shows three people having saline infusions to create the look, inspired by the breakfast favourite

A new television series has shed light on the bizarre Japanese trend for 'bagel heads'.

The extraordinary look, which is created by injecting saline into the forehead, then pressing in the centre of the swollen area with a thumb, is a hit on the country's underground body modification scene.

The dramatic results of the two-hour treatment last just 16-24 hours, after which the saline is absorbed by the body and the forehead reduces back to its normal size.

The process is revealed on National Geographic's Taboo, where three people are seen undergoing the treatment. It shows John, Marin and Scorpion having a large needle, attached to a saline drip, inserted into their foreheads.

The practitioner administering the treatment, Asami, is heard saying: 'You really need to do it the right way, to reduce the risks.'

The sensation is evidently uncomfortable. As it punctures the skin, John says: 'Ooh... That's a needle going into my head... Ooh.'

Once fully inserted, the outline of the needle is clearly visible under the surface of the skin, and the saline slowly begins filling the forehead. At this point, John describes feeling 'a slight stinging sensation'.

He then reports a trickling feeling so intense, he is convinced that the liquid is falling down the outside of his face, asking the room: 'Is there something dripping down my head? ... I can really feel it in there, trickling down.'

After an hour or so, the brave trio's foreheads look significantly swollen, and they appear to have become accustomed to the needle in his head.

'Right now it's kind of a relaxing sensation, kind of tingly, and also a kind of building pressure that's kind of slow and steady that kind of feels like it's putting me to sleep,' John says.

Over the course of two hours, around 400cc of saline is transfused into each forehead. Once it has reached the desired size, the practitioner removes the needle, and presses his thumb into the centre of the swelling.

When the thumb on his forehead is removed John looks stunned, and the room breaks into a round of applause.

'Oh sweet buttery bagels - I'm impressed!' he exclaims. 'I look delicious!'

The finished look is deemed 'cute' by Marin, who sits beside him. Once she and Scorpion, have also had their needles removed and thumbprint made, the trio admire their new looks with delight.

The trend was initially sparked by the artist Keroppy, according to an interview in Vice last year.

He told the magazine how he came across it in Toronto, Canada, at the extreme body modification convention Modcon in 1999.

'I happened to meet Jerome, who was the person who pioneered saline infusions,' he explained. 'We stayed in contact, then eventually I experienced saline with him in 2003 and he gave me permission to bring it to Japan.

'I set up a team in Tokyo to administer infusions for other people. That’s been going since 2007.' He said fans of the procedure enjoy 'saline parties' about twice a year, though some people will take their 'bagel head' to clubs and fetish parties.

The saline injections can be done on any part of the body - some people have even had 'scrotal infusions', he revealed - but for the most part, it is just the forehead.

On its (thankfully) short-term effects, Keroppy joked: 'We enjoy being freaks for the night!'

Ever wondered what makes the iPhone5 work? Well take a CLOSER look

What do the most dedicated fans do as soon as they get their iPhone 5? Why, tear it to pieces of course

  • iFixit team disassembles new iPhone in order to figure out who makes the components
  • Sony, Texas Instruments and Qualcomm provide parts of the phone - but Samsung seems conspicuously absent
  • Steve Jobs's mantra to make it as 'beautiful' within as on the surface is alive and well

Fans have been standing in queues for days, anxious to get their hands on Apple's latest iPhone.

So what do one group of fans do the moment they get the iPhone in their hands? Why, tear it down into little pieces, of course!

However, this is standard practice for the iFixit team, who always deconstruct products to figure out the value and provenance of the components inside.

The insides of a phone can be quite revealing to tech fans.

You can see if corners have been shaved, or no expense spared on the components inside.

You can even divulge information about Apple's relationships with suppliers - for instance, arch-rival Samsung seems more absent than first expected.

India to launch Mars mission in 2013

France24 News

AFP - India plans to launch a space probe that will orbit Mars in November 2013, a senior official from the country's space research establishment said on Monday.

"We are scheduling to launch the Mars mission November 27, 2013 when the red planet will be closer to the earth," K. Radhakrishnan, chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told reporters in Bangalore.

"We plan to put a spacecraft in an elliptical orbit for studying its atmosphere and detect presence of life on its surface," he said in the southern Indian city, where ISRO is headquartered.

The project would mark another step in India's ambitious space programme, which placed a probe on the moon three years ago and envisages its first manned mission in 2016.

According to Radhakrishnan, the unmanned mission could cost nearly five billion rupees ($90 million).

India has a well-established space programme, which is a source of strong national pride, but it has also attracted criticism as the government struggles to tackle dire poverty and child malnutrition.

In September 2009, India's Chandrayaan-1 lunar probe discovered water on the moon, boosting the country's credibility among more experienced space-faring nations.

But the space programme suffered a setback in December 2010 when a satellite launch vehicle blew up and fell into the Bay of Bengal after veering from its intended flight path.

The United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and China have all sent missions to Mars.

The US robot Curiosity is currently on the surface of the "Red Planet" after landing on Mars more than a month ago.

It is a nuclear-powered vehicle that is designed for a two-year mission, though scientists hope it will last at least twice that long.

Did Apple get their iconic designs from copying Germany`s 50`s-60`s Braun Company???

Did Apple find inspiration for its iconic products in the simplicity of Braun designs from the 50s and 60s?
DAILYMAIL
September 9, 2012

The huge success of Apple products over the last 15 years has regularly been attributed in part to their incredibly iconic designs.

But were Steve Jobs, Apple co-founder and former CEO, and Jonathan Ive, the company’s Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, inspired by products designed by German consumer goods manufacturer Braun in the 1950s and 1960s?

German influence: Was the original iPod design inspired by Braun's T3 pocket radio?
German influence: Was the original iPod design inspired by Braun's T3 pocket radio?
Compelling visual evidence, compiled by Cult of Mac, suggests a number of Apple products that bear more than a passing resemblance to the simplicity of Braun designs from more than 60 years ago.

The original iPod from 2001, for instance, has similarities with the Braun T3 pocket radio from 1958. Other products that suggest a Braun influence include the PowerMac G5, the 2007 iMac and even the iPhone's calculator app from 2007.

In 1998, Apple launched the iMac, the computer that helped turn around the then struggling company. Designed by Ive, its success heralded his arrival as a design guru.

Influential figure: Apple designer Jonathan Ive (right) has spoken of the influence of Braun designer Dieter Rams (left) on his work
Ive has long acknowledged the influence on his work of Dieter Rams, who was Braun’s head designer for nearly 30 years. In 2011, Ive wrote the forward for Dieter Rams' book 'As Little Design As Possible'.

'What Dieter Rams and his team at Braun did was to produce hundreds of wonderfully conceived and designed objects: products that were beautifully made in high volumes and that were broadly accessible', he wrote.

For his part, Rams is understood to regard Apple products - and Ive's kind words - as a compliment.

For how long will you chase this dunya?

For how long will you busy in your heads and your minds - thinking of dunya (this world), chasing the endless materialistic things?...

Allah says, 'For how long will you chase these worldly things with each other? Competing with one another? Until you visit the grave? For how long is the dunya going to keep you away from me - in your mind, in your hearts? Wait till I get you in the grave.'

Sura Takathur contains heavy verses for you and I, will Allah get us in the grave? Are we going to him happy?

All the things of the dunya you and I chase - USELESS will it be when we come to the grave, it will not benefit us one iota.

Let this be a stern warning to the people, the Muslims and my family members(you know who you are) who drown themselves into the vices of this dunya as if no tomorrow exists nor the hereafter. Your houses, wealth, status will not help you one bit in the grave nor the afterlife. You will certainly have to account for every single penny and material Allah bestowed upon you and account for them. Where will your dominance, arrogance, enmity, jealousy be in the grave or that fateful day when we stand trial in front of our Lord? There will be no respite, but there is still time while possible, use it for good.

The worldly pleasures have diverted you, until you visit the grave; heavy verses from Allah to show us the truth [Sura Takathur]

Competition in [worldly] increase diverts you. Until you visit the graveyards. No! You are going to know. Then no! You are going to know. No! If you only knew with knowledge of certainty...You will surely see the Hellfire. Then you will surely see it with the eye of certainty. Then you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure.

The dirty truth to this dunya

Today we are caught up so much in this dunya we forget that one day we are going to be under the ground, and who knows that day could be tomorrow, Brother Jalal ibn Saeed gives a inspiring talk at a Janzah of a brother, he explains that in reality the purpose of the Janazah is not for the deceased but for those who attend the Janazah for them to wake up and realise we too will be in the grave sooner or later.

May Allah make the grave a garden of Paradise for all of us.
