Traitors in our midst? NYPD pays to bait Muslims into extremism

NYPD paid teenage informant THOUSANDS to 'bait' Muslims into talking about terrorism and jihads
  • Police enticed Shamiur Rahman, 19, to help spy on Muslims for them
  • He collected pictures of people at rallies, Muslim community talks, and interior shots of mosques
  • Paid him up to $1,000-per-month
  • NYPD denies widespread spying but CIA allegedly helped set program up
By ASSOCIATED PRESS/DAILYMAIL
October 23, 2012

A paid informant for the New York Police Department's intelligence unit was under orders to 'bait' Muslims into saying incriminating things as he lived a double life.

student group's talk, where he posed

Shamiur Rahman, a 19-year-old American of Bengali descent, was paid up to $1,000 per month for snapping pictures inside mosques and collecting the names of innocent people attending study groups on Islam, he told The Associated Press.

He now denounces his work as an informant, saying police told him to embrace a strategy called 'create and capture.'

The strategy had him create a conversation about jihad or terrorism, then capturing the response to send to the NYPD.

In addition to the monthly payments, Rahman also earned goodwill from the police after a string of minor marijuana arrests.

'We need you to pretend to be one of them,' Rahman recalled the police telling him. 'It's street theater.'

Rahman, who said he plans to move to the Caribbean, said he now believes his work as an informant against Muslims in New York was 'detrimental to the Constitution.'

After he disclosed to friends details about his work for the police — and after he told the police that he had been contacted by the AP — he stopped receiving text messages from his NYPD handler, 'Steve,' and his handler's NYPD phone number was disconnected.

Rahman's account shows how the NYPD unleashed informants on Muslim neighborhoods, often without specific targets or criminal leads. Much of what Rahman said represents a tactic the NYPD has denied using.

Informants like Rahman are a central component of the NYPD's wide-ranging programs to monitor life in Muslim neighborhoods since the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Police officers have eavesdropped inside Muslim businesses, trained video cameras on mosques and collected license plates of worshippers. Informants who trawl the mosques — known informally as 'mosque crawlers' — tell police what the imam says at sermons and provide police lists of attendees, even when there's no evidence they committed a crime.
The programs were built with unprecedented help from the CIA.

Police recruited Rahman in late January, after his third arrest on misdemeanor drug charges, which Rahman believed would lead to serious legal consequences.

An NYPD plainclothes officer approached him in a Queens jail and asked whether he wanted to turn his life around: the next month, Rahman said, he was on the NYPD's payroll.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne did not immediately return a message seeking comment about Tuesday. He has denied widespread NYPD spying, saying police only follow leads.
Rahman said he received little training and spied on 'everything and anyone.' He took pictures inside the many mosques he visited and eavesdropped on imams.

By his own measure, he said he was very good at his job and his handler never once told him he was collecting too much, no matter whom he was spying on.

Rahman said he thought he was doing important work protecting New York City and considered himself a hero.

One of his earliest assignments was to spy on a February lecture at the Muslim Student Association at John Jay College in Manhattan. The speaker was Ali Abdul Karim, the head of security at the Masjid At-Taqwa mosque in Brooklyn.

The NYPD had been concerned about Karim for years and already had infiltrated the mosque, according to NYPD documents obtained by the AP.

Rahman also was instructed to monitor the student group itself, though he wasn't told to target anyone specifically. His NYPD handler, Steve, told him to take pictures of people at the events, determine who belonged to the student association and identify its leadership.

Rahman attended the event with Karim and listened, ready to catch what he called a 'speaker's gaffe.' The NYPD was interested in buzz words such as 'jihad' and 'revolution,' he said. Any radical rhetoric, the NYPD told him, needed to be reported...

What does your sleeping position say about you?

What does your sleeping position say about your personality? Worriers curl into a ball while stubborn people lie like logs, claims researcher

  • More than half of people in the UK curl into the fetal position as they sleep - a sign they are seeking comfort - according to new research
  • The 'log' is the second most common position, adopted by those with rigid personalities, according to the study by a body language expert
  • 'Yearners', who sleep with arms out-streched, account for the 25% of the population who are longing to chase their dreams
  • 17% of those surveyed adopt the 'freefall' position, suggesting they feel a lack of control over their lives

Did you sleep like a log last night? If you did, you need to relax more, according to new research. A body language expert claims the position we sleep in gives a revealing insight into our personalities - with those of us who snooze stretched out like logs more likely to be stubborn and inflexible.

The study suggests that, when we climb into bed and drift off, people in the UK fall into four groups; fetals, logs, yearners and freefallers.

More than half of people in the UK adopt the foetal position as they sleep Those of us who adopt the log position are more likely to be rigid and inflexible
Sleeping like a log: More than half of us in the UK sleep curled up in the fetal position, left, suggesting we are a nation of worriers, while the second most common position is the log, right, which indicates a rigid personality

More than half of us - 58 per cent - curl up into the fetal position while we sleep, indicating that we are a nation of worriers.

Expert Robert Phipps said those who favor the fetal position, snoozing with knees up and head down, are seeking to return to their comfort zone.

Fetal sleepers are conscientious and ordered, but can over-think things and worry unnecessarily, he claimed. The second most common sleeping position is the log, with 28 per cent of people in the UK lying fully extended in a straight line with their arms by their sides.

Mr Phipps claims log sleepers are stubborn and set in their ways, and their preference for having things done their way can make them appear bossy and aloof.

While 'sleeping like a log' sounds like the ideal, Mr Phipps said those of us who adopt the log position can wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep. The body language expert claims 'loggers' need to relax more and let their muscles unwind, leaving them to wake up less rigid both physically and mentally.

'Yearners' sleep with their arms outstretched in front of them, indicating a desire to chase their dreams 'Freefallers' sleep on their stomachs with their arms at right-angles
Nap-time: 'Yearners' sleep with their arms outstreched, left, while 'freefallers' sleep on their stomachs with their arms at right-angles, right

He uses the term 'yearners' to describe the 25 per cent of people who sleep with their arms stretched out in front, a position he claims has two possible meanings. While it can be interpreted as symbolic of the sleeper's desire to chase their dreams by taking on new and exciting challenges, the arms outstreched position can also suggest the sleeper feels they are being chased.

Mr Phipps said that, while yearners wake up eager to face the challenges of the day and grasp new opportunities, they can also waste time and energy chasing things that don't provide the fulfillment they seek. Freefallers account for 17 per cent of the population, and sleep face down on their stomachs with their arms at right-angles, as though clinging on to their bed for dear life.

Mr Phipps described it as physically the least comfortable sleeping position, and said many freefallers feel as though they lack control in their lives and are merely 'hanging on for the ride'.

He claimed freefallers can wake up feeling anxious about things they need to get done during the day, in his study commissioned by the Premier Inn budget hotel chain.

The percentages are understood to add up to over 100 per cent to take account of people who change sleeping positions during the night.

The man who transformed a Boeing 727 into his dream home

Living the high life: Engineer transforms retired passenger jet into 'dream home' in the Oregon woods
DAILY MAIL
October 14, 2012

Engineer Bruce Campbell is living the high life after converting a retired passenger jet into his dream home.

The 62-year-old bought the Boeing 727-200 for around $100,000 and spent a decade turning it into his abode.

Tucked away in the woods of Oregon, the aircraft Mr Campbell describes as 'a bird that's meant to fly' has all modern conveniences but he says his 'favorite playroom' is the cockpit.

The engineer ripped the rows of seats from the 727-200's main cabin and turned the space into a bedroom, lounge and office.

Mr Campbell, of Hillsboro, cooks his meals in the former cabin-crew kitchen and has also upgraded the plane's bathroom and built a shower.

He loves to give visitors tours around his unusual choice of home.

Mr Campbell had to tinker with the aircraft's three toilets but they were soon up and running.
'It's small but I'm small', he told CNN of the restroom.

He also installed a shower within the main cabin of the plane.

Mr Campbell concedes the shower doesn't afford much privacy but points out that if you live in the middle of the woods that isn't a pressing concern.

Describing the venture as an 'experiment', Mr Campbell hopes that others will follow his lead.
'It is a good experiment in a living environment that, I hope, will prove to be something that mankind will embrace with vigour at a later time,' he said.

Lighting up with glee, Mr Campbell loves to usher guests into the space he describes as his 'favourite playroom': the cockpit...

ACT OF WAR: Syria intercepts and detains civilian airliner en route to Syria from Moscow

Turkish F16s intercept Syrian civilian flight from Moscow to Damascus
RT NEWS
October 11, 2012

Turkish F-16 fighter jets forced a Syrian airline passenger plane to land in Ankara over suspicions it was carrying "non-civilian" cargo. The Damascus-bound plane, which had departed from Moscow, has departed after a nine-hour inspection.

Ankara has granted the Syrian plane a departure clearance, after Turkish security confiscated its suspicious cargo, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told a local broadcaster.

“Just because of the clear evidence that we received, we negotiated with our prime minister and decided to let the plane fly on to Syria with the passengers, but we are going to hold on to the material because of the ongoing investigation and the next steps,” he said. “Our investigation is continuing. Since there might be materials that were supposed to be declared but have not been, we are holding this material in our hands to continue to inspect.”

Earlier, Davutoglu said that Ankara had received intelligence that the Syrian plane was carrying "certain equipment in breach of civil aviation rules," but refused to comment on the presumed content.

The Turkish authorities were interested in some spare parts, which a businessman bought in Russia and was transporting to Syria, passenger Fatima Al-Saman told RT. She said they were clearly not weapons.

“They started unloading some packages. They opened them, took pictures. There were many people. We all saw what was in there. There were no weapons. You could see it with an unaided eye!” she said.

Al-Saman added the search involved only luggage, and the passengers were mainly ignored by the Turks. Russian diplomats arrived at the airport but were reportedly not allowed to meet with the passengers.

[...]

The Airbus, which belongs to Syrian Air, was intercepted on its way from Moscow by F16 jets and forced to land at the capital's Esenboga Airport as it entered Turkish airspace.

Turkey is determined to stop any transfer of weapons to Syrian administration through its airspace, Davutoglu said Wednesday. The FM added that Turkey has every right under the international law to investigate any civilian plane suspected to be carrying military materials.
Meanwhile, Ankara has banned Turkish passenger flights from entering Syrian airspace.

"All civilian flights in Syrian airspace have been stopped since it is no longer safe," the ministry added in their Wednesday statement. A Turkish plane that had already taken off for Saudi Arabia made a detour and landed at the Adana airport, reports Today's Zaman newspaper.
17 Russians, including kids, onboard – Russian Foreign Ministry to RT

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said diplomats are already heading to the airport and sent an information request to the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

“The preliminary information is that out of 35 passengers, there may be 17 Russians on board, children among them,” Maria Zakharova, the chief of the Foreign Ministry’s Information Department, exclusively told RT.

Tensions between Turkey and Syria have escalated since a Syrian shell killed five civilians in the border town of Akcakale last week...

If you weren’t able to make it to the premier of Khufu Reborn, the second episode of Jean-Pierre Houdin’s theory of how the Great Pyramid of Khufu was built, then you are in luck—the full presentation is now available on the web, courtesy of Dassault Systèmes! This isn’t just a dry lecture with some slides, this is the full 3D presentation, with narration.

In addition to providing the full simulation illustrating Jean-Pierre’s theory in detail, the Khufu Reborn universe is interactive. You can actually navigate you way around the Giza Plateau of 4,500 years ago. But if you aren’t ready to dive into Khufu’s world just yet, this Em Hotep tour and tutorial will equip you for the journey.

On January 27, 2011, Khufu Reborn premiered at La Géode in Paris, France. This was the official launch of Episode Two of Jean-Pierre Houdin’s work with the Great Pyramid of Pharaoh Khufu. The presentation was a stunning larger than life 3D simulation of the Giza Plateau, the pyramid, and a detailed explanation of Jean-Pierre’s theory. But if you were unable to attend the premier, Dassault Systèmes has brought it to you, right to your desktop.

Now you can log on to the Project Khufu section of the Dassault Systèmes website, download a small plugin, and see the presentation in its entirety, but with an advantage those of us in attendance did not have—at any point during the presentation you can take control and travel to anyplace in the Khufu Reborn universe to look at things in as much detail as you wish. Here is the link to the site:

Click Here to Go Back 4,500 Years to Khufu’s Egypt!

The Khufu Reborn online interactive simulation is rendered in such detail that it really has to be seen to be believed. And despite having all of the eye-popping graphics and navigational freedom of a cutting edge first-person video game, this universe is not by any stretch make-believe. The environment is based on accurate surveys of the Giza Plateau and the pyramid itself, with the clock turned back 4,500 years. Ancient details, based on up-to-date archaeological evidence, have been recreated in a way that lets you move through the Giza Plateau of Khufu and his Master Builder, Hemienu.

Poem 'Beloved' from Imam Ghazali's Ihya Uloom Id-deen on the character of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Beloved
Ihya Uloom Id-deen
Imam Ghazali

Can you imagine one who was the gentlest of men
while being the most brave and just of all who've been
one who conquered all desires of self that make men weak
who granted all who asked him precisely what they seek

whom only jewels poured out his mouth whenever he would speak
who was the gem amongst the stones of men who shined unique
a selflessness and generosity that some would say
was merely myth until they'd seen one of the lovers of his way

who used to mend his sandals, used to patch his clothes
who used to serve his family whenever he was home
who had a noble shyness, not gazing long upon a face
who honored all he ever met, be he king or be he slave

who always felt himself at home the most among the poor
who never angered for himself but only for his Lord
always just, always truthful, conscious of the One
even if it brought discomfort to himself and those he loved

a satiated stomach his whole life was rarely felt
not due to poverty but preference of others to himself
who knew the time of day by sun, the direction by the stars
who'd walk amongst his enemies without a single guard

devoid of any trace of self, just humble and serene
eloquent but not verbose, just precisely what he means
whom all within his company felt light and sacred cheer
whom there was not a thing within creation that he feared

who loved to play with children and run races with his wives
who'd join the festivities and honor customs of all tribes
when people yelled and lost their cool around him he was calm
who asked forgiveness for his enemies even as they did him wrong

who kept a goat he'd milk himself for people in his house
whose wives when asked about him said, "he was the perfect spouse"
who never looked down on a pauper or flattered once a prince
who called every soul unto the One without even a flinch

every single gorgeous trait of character he had
of noble lineage yet he was the orphan of his clan
one imbued with wisdom and piercing inner sight
yet he was the unlettered one who'd neither read nor write

all knowledge and trait of character unflawed
were placed inside his very being directly by Allah
the way to salvation and triumph after death
to detachment and joy in life with each and every breathe

to walk the righteous path and never falter come what may
and may Allah give us success in following his way
they call him al-Amin, the trustworthy, the honest
and I call him beloved, my master Muhammad

(May God shower peace and blessings upon him)
