Is there more than meets the eye with North Korea`s sudden and recent agreement to freeze uranium enrichment for food aid?

N. Korea agrees to freeze nuclear programs for U.S. food aid
Washington Times
Wednesday, February 29, 2012

North Korea will put a moratorium on nuclear tests, long-range missile launches and uranium enrichment activities at its major Yongbyon nuclear facility, the State Department announced Wednesday.

Pyongyang will also allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to return to North Korea to “verify and monitor the moratorium on uranium enrichment activities at Yongbyon and confirm the disablement of the 5-MW reactor and associated facilities,” said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

In exchange, the United States has agreed to deliver a significant food-aid package to North Korea.

The announcement marks a new step in the tense relations between the West and North Korea following the death late last year of longtime North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il.

His passing set in motion an uncertain transfer of power to his son, 27-year-old Kim Jong-un, who is slated to become the youngest person to head a nation with nuclear weapons.

While the State Department took care not to characterize the agreement as a quid pro quo, Ms. Nuland said U.S. officials have agreed to meet with representatives from Pyongyang.

They will “finalize administrative details necessary to move forward with our proposed package of 240,000 metric tons of nutritional assistance along with the intensive monitoring required for the delivery of such assistance,” she said.

The sudden concessions by Pyongyang, and agreement by the United States arrives on the heals of a meeting last week in Beijing between Glyn Davies, the U.S. special representative for North Korea policy, and Kim Kye-gwan, North Korea’s first vice foreign minister.

U.S. officials also reaffirmed that Washington has no “hostile intent toward” North Korea and “is prepared to take steps to improve our bilateral relationship in the spirit of mutual respect for sovereignty and equality,” Ms. Nuland said.

“The United States still has profound concerns regarding North Korean behavior across a wide range of areas, but today´s announcement reflects important, if limited, progress in addressing some of these,” she said.

The Feb. 23 meeting in Beijing also signaled the first thaw in relations toward Pyongyang since six-nation talks with North Korea broke down after the communist government violated a 2005 agreement to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons in exchange for aid and security guarantees.

The six-nation talks — involving the United States, Russia, China, Japan and North and South Korea — were declared effectively dead in 2009 when North Korea claimed to have successfully created an underground nuclear explosion.

Syria's armed groups get Franco-US aid: Report

Armed groups in Syria have admitted that they have received weapons from French and American sources, reports say.

A defected military officer, who refused to be named, told reporters in the western Syrian city of Al-Qusayr on Tuesday that armed groups receive “French and American assistance.”

He then clarified that the group had received weapons and anti-aircraft missiles from France and the United States.

"We now have weapons and anti-aircraft missiles and… we will defeat Bashar [al-Assad]," the general said.

His comments came days after some of the Western and Arab countries said that they would support Syria’s anti-government groups by arming them and supplying them with financial support.

This is while as the first step toward implementing reforms with the aim of ending unrest, the Syrian government has recently endorsed a new draft constitution that was approved by nearly 90 percent of eligible voters in a Sunday referendum.

Russia, however, has continued calling for the resolution of Syrian crisis through dialogue, showing unabated opposition to the interference of Western powers in the affairs of the Arab state.

At a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov reaffirmed that Russian diplomacy has been working and will continue to work to resolve the Syrian crisis.

"Today it is clear that aims to instill democracy through force are doomed to disaster and achieve the opposite. What is important today is that we do not allow for a full scale civil war in Syria," Galitov said.

The Green lions are alive and well in Southeast Libya

Jalil and the Libyan army chief can say all they want, they can`t silence the truth, they do not have an effective control of Libya contrary to popular belief among the world powers, only to the capital of Tripoli and a handful of cities. The rest of the villages and tribes are still loyal to the old regime and Green revolution and will seize the appropriate opportunity to regain and assert control over the murdering thugs that now claim to be the government and sole representatives of the Libyan people. They will God willing bring back the glorious Libya from being a failed state.

A frightening prediction that would soon come true for countless thousands of Libyans. Shame on those who spent the blood of the libyan people for their own selfish gain.

Well there you have it, nearly 90% of Syrians say yes to a new Constitution

89% vote in favor of new Syrian Constitution

Syria’s Interior Minister has announced that 89 per cent of those who took part in the referendum have voted in favor of a new constitution. The new law puts an end to five decades of one-party rule among other reforms put forward by President Assad.
Interior Minister Ibrahim al-Shaar announced the results of the referendum at a press conference on Monday.

According to the minister, out of 14,580,000 Syrians eligible to vote some 8,376,000, or about 57 per cent, actually came to the polling stations and voted, RT’s Maria Finoshina reports from Damascus.

Al-Shaar said that the opposition groups tried to hamper the vote in some troubled areas like Homs and Idlib. Armed rebels did not allow some people to get to the polling stations he said. The minister has not provided the figures on turnout in these cities.

“In Homs we are going to fight till the very end, till there are no armed groups,” he said, as cited by Finoshina.

Those who live in such troubled regions had a chance to vote at polling stations which had been set up out of areas where clashes with the armed opposition still continue. Syrians who live in neighboring countries voted at stations set up near the borders.

“We are satisfied with the results,” al-Shaar said. “The Syrian people have made their choice.”
Russia’s Foreign Ministry considers the results of the referendum in Syria to be evidence of the wide public support for the government's course of reforms.

"The referendum has confirmed that the course for changes is supported by the people,” the ministry’s statement said. “The influence of those opposition groups that called for boycotting the referendum is restricted and gives them no exclusive right to speak on behalf of the Syrian people."

The adopted constitution includes 14 new and 47 amended articles. The reforms put forward by President Assad are designed to stop the bloody uprising and pave the way for free elections in the country.

An unprecedented referendum on a new draft constitution took place in Syria on Sunday. Syrians took an active part in the crucial vote and the officials said turnout was very high.
Despite the fact that the opposition boycotted the referendum, calling it an empty gesture, and called for mass protests, there were no public order violations in Damascus during the vote.
Western politicians considered the referendum to be a farce, with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton calling it "a cynical ploy" and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle describing it as a "sham vote."

Meanwhile, on Monday the European Union has slapped the Syrian government with its toughest set of sanctions yet. They include an asset freeze on officials, and a ban on importing precious metals and minerals from the country.

More than a year since the uprising in Syria began, violence is still raging on in some parts of the country, including the flashpoint city of Homs, where dozens were reported killed during the weekend.

Russia upgrades its 'eyes & ears' in Middle East

Russia upgrades Syria-based electronic station to warn Iran of US/Israeli attack
DEBKAfile Special Report

The Russians have upgraded their Jabal Al Harrah electronic and surveillance station south of Damascus opposite Israel’s Sea of Galilee, adding resources especially tailored to give Tehran early warning of an oncoming US or Israeli attack, DEBKAfile’s US military sources report.

Before it was boosted by extra advanced technology and manpower, the station covered civilian and military movements in northern Israel up to Tel Aviv, northern Jordan and western Iraq. Today, its range extends to all parts of Israel and Jordan, the Gulf of Aqaba and northern Saudi Arabia.

Part two of Moscow’s project for extending the range of its Middle East ears and eyes consisted of upgrading the Russian-equipped Syrian radar stationed on Lebanon’s Mount Sannine and connecting it to the Jabal Al Harrah facility in Syria. Russian technicians have completed this project too. Russia is now able to additionally track US and Israeli naval and aerial movements in the Eastern Mediterranean up to and including Cyprus and Greece.

According to our sources, the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kutznetsov’s stay at the Syrian port of Tartus through most of January and up to mid-February had the special mission of keeping an eye out for any Israeli preparations for attacking Iran, Syria or Hizballah. It filled the gap left by the Russian station south of Damascus which was fully occupied with feeding data on Syrian opposition movements to Bashar Assad and watching out for signs of foreign intervention, military or covert, against his regime.

The Russian vessel meanwhile followed increased traffic of US drone over Syria keeping track of the Syrian arsenal of missiles with chemical, biological and nerve gas warheads.
Washington disclosed on Feb. 25 that the US State Department had sent out warnings to six countries, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iraq, to beware of these deadly weapons. It was not clear whether the warning referred to a possible Assad regime’s decision to use WMD against those nations or the danger of their transfer to terrorists embedded within those countries.

Moscow decided to boost its radar tracking and surveillance reach for Iran’s benefit in response to a complaint from Tehran that it could not longer count on Russia for a real-time alert on an incoming US or Israeli military strike, because those resources were stretched to the limit in support of the Assad regime.

After expanding and upgrading their range to meet Iranian needs by interconnecting the two stations and adding extra Russian manpower, Moscow ordered the Admiral Kutznetsov to depart Tartus on Feb. 13 and sail to home port at Severomorsk on the Kola Peninsula. The Russian stations in Syria and Lebanon were by then ready for their expanded missions.

The Strategic Forecasting Inc., commonly known as Stratfor, is a private firm dealing in the lucrative business of intelligence gathering and assessment.

Founded in 1996, the company gained global prominence during the NATO bombing of Kosovo in 1999 when its seemingly cutting-edge analysis was publicized by various news agencies. But it was the events of 9/11 and the subsequent “war on terrorism” that elevated the stature of the firm, turning it into a highly sought after informant for major Western media organizations like Bloomberg, Associated Press, Reuters, The New York Times, and the BBC.

...Stratfor was founded over a decade ago in Austin, Texas by George Friedman, a former political science professor. Friedman is the company’s chief intelligence officer, financial overseer, and CEO.

Commonly referred to as the private CIA, Stratfor claims that it gathers its intelligence through a number of publicly accessible sources, such as wire services, chat hubs, other Internet sites, and unclassified government studies, in addition to well-placed sources internationally. The agency now boasts close to 300,000 subscribers and over two million recipients of free email updates.

Until recently, much of the inner workings of Stratfor had been shrouded in mystery. But last December, members of the internet activism collective Anonymous, hacked into the system during the "LulzXmas" campaign to highlight the plight of Bradley Manning, an American soldier currently incarcerated by the US government for suspicion of passing on information to WikiLeaks.

Consensus of American Intelligence community says Iran not seeking nukes but IAEA reports Iran significantly enriching uranium, so...whose right or is it dis-information?

U.S. does not believe Iran is trying to build nuclear bomb
By Ken Dilanian, Los Angeles Times
February 23, 2012, 6:11 p.m.

Despite the recent US and Israeli hype created around Iran’s nuclear program, a report by American intelligence agencies indicates that Tehran is not seeking to build nuclear weapons.

The most recent report on Iran’s nuclear program “represents the consensus of 16 US intelligence agencies,” the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

The “highly classified” intelligence assessment was reportedly circulated among US policymakers early last year.

The US National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) report published in December 2007 also confirmed with “high confidence” the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.

The Los Angeles Times article notes that:

"A highly classified U.S. intelligence assessment circulated to policymakers early last year
largely affirms that view, originally made in 2007. Both reports, known as national intelligence
estimates, conclude that Tehran halted efforts to develop and build a nuclear warhead in
    2003.

The most recent report, which represents the consensus of 16 U.S. intelligence agencies,
indicates that Iran is pursuing research that could put it in a position to build a weapon, but
that it has not sought to do so.

Although Iran continues to enrich uranium at low levels, U.S. officials say they have not seen
evidence that has caused them to significantly revise that judgment. Senior U.S. officials say
Israel does not dispute the basic intelligence or analysis."

But it was reported by the IAEA on Fri., Feb 24, 2012 that:

"Iran has sharply stepped up its controversial uranium enrichment drive, the United Nations’ nuclear agency said on Friday in a report that will further inflame Israeli fears that the Islamic Republic is pushing ahead with an atomic weapons program, as Russia accused the West of seeking “regime change” in Iran.

...“The Agency continues to have serious concerns regarding possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear program,” the Vienna-based U.N. body said in a quarterly report about Iran issued to its member states, according to Reuters.

...The confidential IAEA report said Iran has, since late last year, tripled output of uranium refined to a level that brings it significantly closer to potential bomb material, an official familiar with the agency’s probe said."
