A gruesome new video which appears to show Muammar Gaddafi's dead body being abused by rebels has surfaced online.
In the shocking clip, which was posted to YouTube on Monday, high-spirited demonstrators apparently use the Libyan dictator's corpse as a ventriloquist's doll. The footage came to light after a Syrian activist linked to it on Twitter, aiming a threat at Syria's leader Bashar Al Assad.

The minute-long video, whose authenticity cannot be independently verified, seems to have been filmed on October 20 last year, the day Gaddafi was captured and killed by rebel troops. It shows a confused scene of celebration as young men shout and cheer next to a van containing an apparently dead body which resembles the dictator. The corpse is topless and covered in blood, and is apparently limp.
One rebel grabs its head and manipulates it while talking in Arabic, apparently mocking the dead leader.

Several of those on the scene are seen filming the proceedings with their cell phones. Gaddafi's body is then taken out of a van and placed on some sort of stretcher.
After the video was posted online, Syrian anti-government prosestor Sami Al Hamwi wrote about it on Twitter, adding: 'Someone needs to send this to Assad.'

After months of fierce resistance to NTC militia backed by allied NATO forces, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was captured on October 21, 2011, in his hometown and stronghold of Sirte while trying to escape from encirclement. He was captured alive, but instead of being treated as prisoner of war, interrogated and put on trial, the former ruler of Libya was tortured for several hours and then murdered by a militia mob.
Later, the NTC claimed they never gave an order to kill Colonel Gaddafi. They even stated that at first the former Libyan leader was fatally wounded when a gunfight between his supporters and NTC fighters broke out after his capture.

(Reuters / Caren Firouz) NATO has failed to investigate scores of civilian deaths incurred during its seven-month military campaign in Libya, Amnesty international says. NATO expressed its “regret” for civilian casualties but has taken no steps to initiate an investigation.
"It is deeply disappointing that more than four months since the end of the military campaign, victims and relatives of those killed by NATO airstrikes remain in the dark about what happened and who was responsible" said Donatella Rovera, the Senior Crisis Response Adviser at Amnesty International on Monday. “Legally, [conducting an investigation was] NATO’s responsibility. Some of the information is only in the hands of NATO,” she added, speaking to RT. “As for the new Libyan authorities, unfortunately, they have shown little or no interest in the plight of the victims of NATO strikes.” Rovera stressed that if NATO is indeed dedicated to the protection of civilians, then it cannot simply “brush aside the deaths of scores of civilians with some vague statement of regret.” The Libyan Health Minister of the National Transitional Council estimated that about 30,000 were killed during the conflict.
Amnesty International appealed to NATO on March 5, urging them to undertake a thorough investigation into the civilian deaths documented by the NGO. Furthermore, they asked for the findings of any subsequent investigation to be publicly disclosed and compensation to be given to the victims’ families. Amnesty said that NATO had not even tried to contact the bereaved families of the victims killed in the strikes. NATO’s response on March 15 did not account for any of the cases of civilian causalities raised by Amnesty International, but instead offered this statement:
“While NATO did everything possible to minimize the risk to civilians, in a complex military operation that risk cannot be reduced to zero. NATO deeply regrets any harm that may have been caused by those air strikes.”
Amnesty International published its findings in a report entitled “Libya: The forgotten victims of NATO Strikes” on Monday.
The document outlines the findings of the NGO’s investigations into civilian casualties of the NATO airstrikes, highlighting numerous occasions when “insufficient precautions were taken in attacks that targeted possible combatants staying at civilian homes.”
The investigation cites 55 named civilians, including women and children who were killed in airstrikes in Tripoli, Zlitan, Majer, Sirte and Brega. Moreover, the NGO found no evidence indicating the strikes carried out on private properties targeted homes being used for military purposes. While the NGO accepts that NATO did take precautions to avoid civilian deaths, it underlined the fact that this did not absolve them from conducting full investigations. The object of the enquiries should establish whether international law was violated during the air strikes.
During its seven-month campaign that ended in the ouster of Colonel Gadaffi, NATO executed around 9,600 strike operations that destroyed 5,900 targets. Coalition forces began their campaign in Libya in March 2011, saying they had a responsibility to protect civilians suffering in the Libyan civil war. French president hit by new claims as confidential note suggests ex-Libyan leader helped finance his election campaign Damaging new claims have emerged about the funding of Nicolas Sarkozy's 2007 election campaign and his links with former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi emerged. The French investigative website Mediapart claims to have seen a confidential note suggesting Gaddafi contributed up to €50m (£42m) to Sarkozy's election fund five years ago. Similar allegations emerged a year ago when Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam claimed Libya helped finance the 2007 campaign and demanded the French president, who led the war on the Libyan leader, return the money.
In an interview with the Euronews TV channel, Saif al-Islam, who is currently being held in Libya after his father's defeat and death, threatened to make details of the bank transfers public after the French leader threw his weight behind opposition forces. The latest allegations come at a crucial time for Sarkozy who is seeking a second term in office in a two-round election in under six weeks.
Mediapart journalist Fabrice Arfi told the Guardian he had seen leaked documents contained in the legal dossier of the affair, currently under investigation by a judge.
"We knew these documents existed but it is the first time we have had the details of what was in them," he said. "And there are lots of details, including dates, places and amounts." One document, a government briefing note, allegedly points to visits to Libya by Sarkozy and his close colleagues and advisers, which it says were aimed at securing campaign funding.
Shortly after Sarkozy's election, Colonel Gaddafi was invited to Paris and allowed to pitch his bedouin tent in the grounds of an official French residence close to the Elysée Palace. He was described as the "Brother Leader" by the French.

Muammar Gaddafi, who for 40 years ruled Libya with fear and violence, was unceremoniously buried at dawn today in an unmarked desert grave.
His inglorious end was witnessed by only two members of Libya's National Transitional Council, who were sworn never to reveal his secret resting place.
As the despot was buried with his son, Mutassim, reports claimed that his favourite son, Saif, was making a desperate bid for the Niger border.
Final Muslim prayers were said over the bodies by Khaled Tantoush, Gaddafi's personal cleric, who was arrested with him.
The rites were also attended by two of Gaddafi's cousins, Mansour Dhao Ibrahim, once leader of the feared People's Guard, and Ahmed Ibrahim.
All were captured with Gaddafi after their convoy was attacked by Nato war planes as they tried to flee Sirte, Gaddafi's home town, just after it had fallen.
Abdel Majid Mlegta, an NTC spokesman, said: 'The NTC officials were handed the body after the sheikh completed the early morning ceremony and are taking him somewhere very far away into the desert.'
'Only two trusted people were assigned to this secret mission,' he added. 'These are not guards, but very trusted NTC people.'
The funeral closed the book on Gaddafi's 42-year rule and the eight-month civil war to remove him, but did not silence international calls for an investigation into his brutal end... (Click here to read the full article)

A month on from Tripoli’s fall to rebel forces, the leaders of France and Britain are traveling to the city in a show of support for the regime their warplanes helped put in power, while those who backed Colonel Gaddafi remain defiant but fearful.
On the eve of the visit of French President Nicholas Sarkozy and British PM David Cameron, the head of the National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdul Jalil, has asked for more weapons to fight pockets of Colonel Gaddafi's loyalists and remove them from their remaining strongholds.
The rebel government thinks the ousted dictator is hiding in southern Libya and planning a fight-back.
However, the new authority is asserting an increasing level of control over the country.
For some, that is cause for celebration – but many others are reserved in their optimism.
In parts of Tripoli it feels as if the rebels’ triumphant campaign never happened, or did so elsewhere, in some parallel version of the Libyan capital.
“We will do anything for Muammar, only Muammar! Even if we give our life for that!” claims one street vendor, while hiding her face from RT’s camera.
In today’s Tripoli, it is becoming a commonplace to meet people who are afraid of speaking openly to journalists as RT’s team discovered on the streets of the city. This is how one encounter went:
“All people here love MuammarGaddafi.”
“We are from television – could you tell us that on camera?”
“No, no.”
“Why?”
“This is dangerous…”
And it was the same story with others who fervently support the ousted Libyan leader.
“Gaddafi is 100 per cent good!”
“We don’t want this revolution, we don’t know the rebels.”
“We want them to go away.”
“Could you talk on camera? We are from TV.”
“No, no, no thanks, if I appear in front of the camera, they will send a bullet to my head…”
“Who? Who?”
“Who? The criminals! You don’t know them? You call them the rebels!”
“Hey guys, do you remember Ehab, the black guy, he was arrested few days ago, after he appeared on TV… don’t do that!”
Those calling themselves rebels are once again celebrating on Martyrs’ Square in downtown Tripoli. This time, they are welcoming Libya’s new government to the capital.
The head of the National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdul Jalil, spoke before large crowds, leaving Libyans in no doubt about who is now in charge.
But while the NTC leader was giving his speech, most of Tripoli’s population preferred to stay close to their businesses and homes.
Those who do not support Mustafa Abdul Jalil and could be seen all across the city proudly waving green flags just weeks ago backing Gaddafi, are now reluctant to leave their own backyards.
“They are afraid because if they go out they will die instantly because there are many people with weapons and guns,” one man, who was afraid to speak on camera, told RT.
With Gaddafi effectively gone, the new authorities have settled down here in the capital, Tripoli. People are chanting that Libya is now a new free country. But it seems there is at least one thing that still remains – fear.
We finally found one young man – Ahmed – brave enough to talk to RT’s crew. This is what he had to say:
“Tripoli is now under the control of the National Transitional Council and we don’t feel we have freedom to talk or to express our opinions. If we say something in favor of Gaddafi they can kill us or arrest us. Of course, many are in fear.”
The 19-year-old says many of his friends have been arrested recently for making statements critical of the new regime. Ironically, we were talking just a kilometer away from one of Gaddafi’s top secret jails for political prisoners known as Abu Salim.
“The rebels, they only represent themselves – not the Libyan people. This revolution started with killings to intimidate through fear. Their hands are all covered in blood,” Ahmed said.
Amnesty International has recently accused both Gaddafi's regime and the one which replaced it of committing war crimes, including killings and torture of soldiers, prisoners and civilians.
Here in the Libyan capital, there is widespread fear that more is in store.

“I myself would die a thousand times for Qaddafi, even now,” said Faraj Mohamed, a 20-year-old soldier from Sirte, lying in a hospital in Tripoli as a prisoner of the Libyan rebels. “I love him because he gave us dignity, and he is a symbol for the patriotism of the country.”
At moments when the rebel guards were out of earshot, Mr. Mohamed said he fought on, fearful of a future without Colonel Qaddafi. He warned what would happen if the rebels take over Libya: “Murder and killing and stealing and chaos.”
“What is happening now is because of the rebels, not Qaddafi,” Mr. Mohamed said.
Mr. Mohamed, his leg in a cast and a wound on his back, lay with five other captives in a prison unit of the Mitiga air base hospital, with an armed guard in the hall. The rebels call them prisoners of war, but Mr. Mohamed was the only one who admitted to fighting for Colonel Qaddafi.
Two fellow patients said they were migrant workers, from Niger and Somalia, who had been falsely accused of being "mercenaries".
Another patient, a Libyan, said he had simply been shot in the street. “I am innocent,” he said. Another was handcuffed to his bedrail.
Mr. Mohamed mentioned how many remember that when Colonel Qaddafi took power in 1969 Libya was a poor and almost entirely undeveloped nation of Bedouin herders whose oil wealth appeared to enrich mainly the foreign companies that exploited it. Qaddafi pursued development programs that helped turn Libya into a primarily urban country.
He said Colonel Qaddafi had brought Libyans self-respect by kicking out foreign colonialists; under Colonel Qaddafi, Libyans celebrated a national holiday every year on the day the United States evacuated the air base that included the hospital where Mr. Mohamed was held.
Then there was the special patronage — buildings, roads, schools, hospitals, jobs — lavished on Colonel Qaddafi’s two former hometowns, Sirte and Sabha. Sirte flourished as Colonel Qaddafi’s favorite place to hold conferences, Mr. Mohamed said of the Mediterranean port city that is his hometown as well.
“Sirte really loves Qaddafi,” he said. “And they will fight for him.”
But he also professed a high-minded fear that without Colonel Qaddafi’s strong hand to preserve order, the rebels would drag Libya into chaos. In a Tripoli neighborhood supportive of Colonel Qaddafi, Mr. Mohamed recalled, he met residents who “said they were scared the rebels would rape the women and kill the men.”
Residents fought for the Colonel even after it was said rebels were inside his compound. Also Mr. Mohamed fought on until the next day, when his militia was in a battle and the rebels shot him.
“I would sacrifice myself, I would sacrifice my family,” he said. “I would die for Qaddafi.”
1. Libya is Africa's largest exporter of oil, 1.7 million tons a day, which quickly was reduced to 300-400,000 ton due to US-NATO bombing. Libya exports 80% of its oil: 80% of that to several EU lands (32% Italy, 14% Germany, 10% France); 10% China; 5% USA.
2. Gaddafi has been preparing to launch a gold dinar for oil trade with all of Africa's 200 million people and other countries interested. French President Nickola Sarkozi called this, "a threat for financial security of mankind". Much of France's wealth—more than any other colonial-imperialist power—comes from exploiting Africa.
3. Central Bank of Libya is 100% owned by state (since 1956) and is thus outside of multinational corporation control (BIS-Banking International Settlement rules for private interests). The state can finance its own projects and do so without interest rates
4. Gaddafi-Central Bank used $33 billion, without interest rates, to build the Great Man-Made River of 3,750 kilometers with three parallel pipelines running oil, gas and water supplying 70% of the people (4.5 of its 6 million) with clean drinking and irrigation water.
5. The Central Bank also financed Africa's first communication satellite with $300 million of the $377 cost. It started up for all Africa, December 26, 2007, thus saving the 45-African nations an annual fee of $500 million pocketed by Europe for use of its satellites and this means much less cost for telephones and other communication systems.
